ABA Model Rule 5.3 extends a lawyer's supervisory obligation to the firm's nonlawyer assistants.
Most firms read that as applying to paralegals, legal secretaries, and document-review vendors. It also applies to the firm's managed service provider. An MSP engineer with standing administrative access to the firm's file system is a nonlawyer assistant whose conduct the firm is responsible for supervising under Rule 5.3.
The practical implication is not that the MSP has to be managed more closely. It is that the firm has to have a documented basis for the supervision that is happening. A named MSP contact. A defined escalation path. A periodic review of what the MSP has done, and whether it matches what the MSP was asked to do.
If your firm cannot produce that documentation, Rule 5.3 is being met in practice without being met in writing. Auditors and carriers increasingly ask for the writing.
